Mirrored in Water / Dans le miroir de l’eau http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/05/02/mirrored-in-water-dans-le-miroir-de-l%e2%80%99eau/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/05/02/mirrored-in-water-dans-le-miroir-de-l%e2%80%99eau/#comments Wed, 02 May 2007 12:38:00 +0000 Lida Photography http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/mirrored-in-water-dans-le-miroir-de-l%e2%80%99eau/ I took this series of photographs at the Seine River bank in Paris in the summer of 2004. They are mostly abstract presentations of human figures, symbolising universal human relations.

The photographs have not been manipulated in any way except for standard colour/contrast adjustments. No graphic or other filters whatsoever have been used. I have achieved the desired effects by playing with light and - as the name of the series implies - reflection.

The collection was displayed  in Tehran (Mah Gallery, 2004), Paris (Mairie du 4e - galeries François Miron et Rivoli, 2006), Valenciennes (Galerie des Wantiers, 2006), and Paris (Paris Photo 2007)

My Present Project is a series of photographs of the French presidential campaign 2007 posters. Along with the campaign in the newspapers, on the radio and television, on political meetings and gatherings, there was this parallel campaign expression of the voters' feelings going on on the city walls that caught my eye.

Caged http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/caged/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/caged/#comments Sun, 29 Apr 2007 12:27:08 +0000 Lida Installation http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/caged/ While working on the “Iranian Gardens” project, I couldn’t help picturing some of these forms lying in ruin and captivity, as if they were denied the chance to grow and multiply, as if all they could do was to witness growth and movement, of which they themselves had no share.

So, I decided to present the same forms in a different arrangement with a new meaning and that’s how “In the Cage” took shape.

The 500 forms are made of clay, were baked at 900°C and glazed, under reduction conditions, at 1000°C. Of these, some are placed in a hand-made metal cage with the rest scattered all around them in an area of approximately 10 square metres.

Thorn Field http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/thorn-field/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/thorn-field/#comments Sun, 29 Apr 2007 12:26:25 +0000 Lida Installation http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/thorn-field/ It all started from a visit to a flower market, nothing out of the ordinary really, until...

Until I saw some thorn bushes lying in a corner, and that started images rushing to my mind: thorns in the sand, a whole field of them...

Plates http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/plates/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/plates/#comments Sun, 29 Apr 2007 12:22:04 +0000 Lida Pottery http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/29/plates/ These are a series of plates with designs that draw from traditional Persian elements and develop them in an abstract manner. Another feature of these plates is their glaze - my attempt at producing a certain reduction glaze which would enhance their abstract quality.

Buried http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/buried/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/buried/#comments Sat, 28 Apr 2007 14:50:43 +0000 Lida Installation http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/05/01/buried/ In a rectangular area, symbolising a mass grave, amidst a pile of dust and rubble, lie a thousand human heads of an abstract design.

Of these forms which range in colour from grey and cream to red, about 600 are glazed and the rest are not.

On approaching the area, a faint groan is heard.

Fish http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/fish/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/fish/#comments Sat, 28 Apr 2007 13:20:38 +0000 Lida Installation http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/05/01/fish/ My “Fish” impart a feeling halfway between life and death, and, depending on where and how they are installed, may resemble either. Arranged in water, they can be taken as a symbol of life and reawakening. Against a parched gloomy background, they may denote death and doom. And, installed in a dark pool of tar, they can be a protest against the destruction of our natural environment.

The forms are 15-35 centimetres in length, baked at 900°C and glazed, under reduction conditions, at 1000°C.

They are in a variety of colours (mostly in the red range) whose transition indicates motion. They can be installed in isolation or in combination, indoors or outdoors.

“Fish” may be installed in a variety of settings, ideally in a pond resembling the traditional Iranian turquoise “howze”.

Growth (Persian Garden) http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/persian-garden/ http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/04/28/persian-garden/#comments Sat, 28 Apr 2007 12:55:40 +0000 Lida Installation http://cyberend.com/lida/2007/05/01/persian-garden/ “Growth” is a symbolic work, a very abstract representation of a Persian garden, which both from the conceptual and the arrangement point of view, exhibits the juxtaposition of unity and plurality, a concept that is very close to the heart of Iranian art and culture.

I initially did this for the Persian Garden Exhibition held in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts in 2004.

At first glance, they all seem to have the same uniform upward movement. However on closer examination these handmade forms reveal their individual uniqueness, each with its own curves, resembling the movement of wind through the trees with a hint of growth in the air.

Considering the ever-decreasing green space in our city, the work can be taken as a lament for the death of our trees and gardens.

Ideally, it is to be installed at the entrances or in the lobbies of public buildings, preferably in combination with water which is one of the fundamental elements of Iranian, or for that matter any, garden. The water could flow in a stream below or by the forms. However, one may forgo the use of water as the use of blue in this work itself symbolizes water.

This work may be installed in combination with “Fish”.

The forms are 3-10 in diameter and 10-45 in height, baked at 900°C and glazed, under reduction conditions, at 1000°C.

They range in colour from blue to green to red and can be installed in isolation or in combination, indoors or outdoors.
